Conventions of film openings

Most film openings are used to introduce the main character/s; the protagonists, antagonist etc, the plot, and establish a platform or scene. Different film genre's will have different conventions to their openings. For example horror will use low angles and lighting to automatically build suspense from the first scene, whereas a teen drama is likely to used mid-shots and possibly a voice over to initiate the plot.
In film openings, sound is a very important factor as it can create emotions that would otherwise not be felt if sound were not there. Sound can add understanding to a film opening; in a horror movie low bass, intense music is used to build anticipation, if the music were not there the film would create a completely different emotion and possibly bore audiences.
