Memorable Costumes from Films

Costume is a key element of mise-en-scene, and communicates traits to the audience, revealing details of characters or the plot. For example: without costume we wouldn't be able to see Cinderella's magical transformation from the rags to riches!

Characters from films that have a memorable costume and make-up include:

  • The Great Gatsby 2013                                                                                                      Costume designer, Catherine Martin, recreates the style inspired from 1920's New York, to show the era the film was set in. Character, Daisy Buchanan, wears sparkly dresses put together with some jewellery or head piece to show her glamorous modelling culture. Her make-up is subtle throughout the film to make her look like she has natural beauty that also reflects on her character type.

  • The Hunger Games 2012                                                                                                                 This film is based on two divided groups and each group can be identified by what they wear. The downtrodden district folk wear drab clothing which is suited to the condition they live in and reflects the depression they suffered from. The character, Katniss Everdeen, is an example of a member from the district. She is dressed with practical clothing like trousers and a black t-shirt, which foreshadows her later adventurous activities. She also carries a mocking jay necklace which is symbolic for the rebellion attitudes towards the opposition called the Capitol.

  • Clueless 1995                                                                                                                                   The character Cher Horowitz is a spoilt Beverley Hills teenager. You can notice this in the way she dresses, wearing denim vests, knee high socks, platform shoes and fluffy accessories. She dresses uniquely in contrast with the other characters in the film that wear grunge shirts, baggy jeans and baseball caps. Fashion used in teen high-school film signify hierarchy, showing who has power.
