What is the purpose of a film opening?

Usually the film will have an intense opening to get the audience thrilled to find out more. Film openings may reveal small details about the setting or the characters. An example of this is presented in the film ‘Juno’ – the girl is walking around her village. As the camera follows her round, we find out her village is full of excitement, unlike the character, who is just drinking her milk casually.  This foreshadows the rest of the film, implying the character is relaxed in her community.
A good film opening should also include the credits, so we know as the audience, who produced the film and the cast. An example where this is shown is in the film, ‘Flubber’. We see the members of the cast being projected onto the sky setting in sync with the music. However, in recent times, film editors have decided it’s best for the credits to be shown at the end of the films.

We can tell what genre a film is based on the music selection in the opening. If it’s upbeat like in ‘Skyfall’ we can predict the film is going to be an action- thriller genre as it suits the mission intense heartbeat. Also in the film ‘Skyfall’ we can hear the singer Adelle lyrics. She sings, “This is the end”, which suggests there will be a mission event during the film.
