Sound Terminology

Sound

Ambient sound- Background sounds which are presented in a scene or location.

Diegetic- Sound in the scene e.g a cough.

Non- Diegetic - Music over the scene that actors can't hear.

Score- A piece specified for a scene.

Song- A type of noise.

Voiceover- Someone narrates off screen.

Dialogue- Script/ speech from characters.

Foley - Additional sound put onto film.

Synchronous- Sound that comes off an object e.g alarm clock.

Asynchronous - Where the soundtrack is deliberately out of sync.

Sound bridge - Connects and continues the sound through shots.

Sound motif- Repeated idea in sound.
